Six Hitting Hannah Makes Amends...

Welcome to Danbury Queens Park Cricket Club

Six hitting Guy Hannah made amends for the 1sts, to make it 6 wins from 8 games

The 1st XI sneak home by 1 wicket with 2 balls remaining after a mediocre performance away at Hockley. Report below...

Six Hitting Hannah Makes Amends as 1stXI win at Hockley

For what turned out to be a crucial victory for the 1’s, all the pre-match was surprisingly dominated by the subject of cars. Firstly skipper CJ flaunted his particularly sexy new green Nissan Micra and then the worlds least experienced driver JG led the worlds slowest ever convoy towards Hockley leaving the skipper to run the last 100 yards on foot in order to make the toss in time!

However, win the toss he did and DCC were in the field. JG & Guy opened up, but despite a slow start initially, Hockley started to build steadily. A sharp low catch by Tommy the Tug (Senior) off CJ’s first over proved the breakthrough. Then Guy, replacing JG at the “Graffiti” End, removed the other opener caught behind by Douche. Hockley were 60/2, but this accelerated to a comfortable 120/2 at the mid-way drinks interval. Manoeuvring the 4 bowlers around was the main challenge for DCC, as well as protecting the very short square boundary. After spells at both ends from CJ & Guy, the return of JG broke what had looked like a very settled 3rd wicket partnership - Tugger Snr with another catch. The following over Nobby removed both the settled No.4, Paige, and had the No.6 caught smartly by CJ at slip with the very next ball. The hat-trick was just about avoided, but the run rate ground to a halt. JG claimed another before finishing his 12 over spell, and the return of CJ and Guy saw wickets 7 and 8 fall for little over 160 runs…

However, unlike on previous occasions this season, DQPCC let the advantage slip and a final wicket partnership of 50 or so, took Hockley up to and over 200. This was a score that had seemed unlikely for so long, but some sloppy fielding and a plethora of wides, unfortunately mostly from Guy (24) kept Ian very busy behind the stumps & left Mr Extra’s as top scorer just one short of his half-century on 49! It was a slightly dejected side that slumped off the pitch at the interval knowing that although 208 was more than Hockley should have got, 209 was more than gettable on a pitch that had caused few headaches for the batsmen.

Hockley: 208/8. Whitehead 2/52, Hannah 2/65, Huntington 2/50, Rayner 2/25

While the team enjoyed a decent tea, Guy sulked and skulked around, feeling so terrible he offered to umpire the entire 45 overs… a request we were happy to allow!! Tommy the Tug (Junior) and Ian strode out to open the innings, at this stage the best of friends! A comfortable opening 10 overs followed, until it all went badly wrong. A clip to midwicket from Tommy saw the former Trolley attendant set off vocally and quickly from the strikers end. Ian was firmly stationary at the non-strikers end. It was a battle of the mind, who would give in first; as Tommy kept coming Ian remained stationary. As the fielding went on in the background, Tommy got closer and closer to Ian… it was only as he was close enough to see the white in his team-mates eyes did he crestfallenly turned and desperately lunge back towards his end. Only a smart piece of keeping denied Tugger Jnr & he was run out by 6 inches having covered most of the 22 yards and back again.

James arrived at the crease and immediately looked like the calm collected figure we needed. The runs flowed, not fast but accumulated and it took the introduction of the leg spinner from the “Howling Dogs” End to wrestle the initiative back for Hockley… After a big wide & then a graceful sweep for four by Ian, a big leg break removed the DCC keeper - Bowled for 40. CJ came to the wicket and disdainfully clumped his first ball back over the bowlers head for four. However the leggie wasn’t done yet & in his next over bowled James (20) in a similar way to Ian. After a decent partnership with CJ, JB holed out off the leg spinner for 14 and Tugger Snr followed in his next over for 1, DQPCC were now 135/5 from 34 overs and in a bit of bother!

Cue fans favourite Paul “Nobby” Rayner at number 7. And he didn’t disappoint. A collection of much needed boundaries in partnership with CJ kpet the run rate needed down at 6/7 per over. However just after CJ collected his 50, a second run off the final ball of the 42nd over proved to be that little push too far and a jubilant Hockley celebrated CJ’s dismissal, run out for 55. The mood in the dugout changed. Pete Newton walked out at No. 8, but was unfortunately run out backing up at the non-strikers end and the pressure passed onto “Robo,” Tugger Junior’s Filmstar mate, who had fielded excellently during the first innings. Nobby controlled the strike in the penultimate over and with 7 balls to go “Robo” prepared to face his first ball…

196/7(13 needed from 7 balls 3 wkts in hand)
43.6) Robo… 4 – Bashed through midwicket for a crucial boundary!

200/7 (9 needed from 6 balls 3 wkts in hand)
44.1) Nobby... BOWLED for 31 – JG is the new batsman at No.10

200/8 (9 needed from 5 balls 2 wkts in hand)
44.2) JG... WIDE... Robo Run Out at the non-strikers end for 4 - Guy is the new batsman at No.11

201/9 (8 needed from 5 balls 1 wkt in hand)
44.2) JG... 1 - squeezed out yorker to short fine leg

202/9 (7 needed from 4 balls 1 wkt in hand)
44.3) GH... 6 – juicy full toss on middle/leg, swiped humongously over Cow for 6!!!!

208/9 (1 needed from 3 balls 1 wkt in hand) “Start the car!!”
44.4) GH... 4 - turned through the legside through the ring & runs away for 4 - Victory

We had won!! Euphoric scenes out in the middle as a helmeted JG & Guy embraced. The guys on the sidelines ran on to celebrate a victory we had almost thrown away!! It was a wonderful end for Guy, who had been so let down by his own performance with the ball.

Danbury: 209/9. Huntington 55, Faulconbridge 40, Rayner 31

An excellent win, despite some phases of very average cricket from DQPCC. Website MOM goes to Nobby, for his 2/25 and excellent acceleration in his 31 with the bat

A comfortable win for the 2nd XI away at Ecko saw CSI Vinny Atkinson roll away the years with a Five-for, as Simon Gauntley hit 49 in a 9 wicket win

Week 3 saw both sides Bowlers hitting top form...

Both the 1st XI away at Gt Burstead, and the 2nd XI at home to Pegasus, bowled out their opposition for under 120, before knocking the runs off before 6pm!!

The 1st XI, with a stronger attack than the previous week, looked to overcome their defeat to Gt Baddow away at Burstead. Due to CJs motoring/location difficulties Ian correctly called heads & opted to field. Burstead were bowled out for 118 including 4 wkts for Guy, 3 for Nobby, 2 for JG & 1 for Sid later and DQPCC were in the driving seat. Despite losing our openers for single figure scores, an aggressive CJ & no less combative James saw the 1sts home with 8 wkts to spare, James ending the match with a huge straight six, whilst CJ ended with 69*

The 2nd XI, although lacking in player numbers, lacked little in performance as they bowlers skittled Pegasus on a decent enough surface at the DCG, Alex Franklin the pick with 4 wickets. The opening bats then made little time in blasting away the total, with runs for both Ian & Stuart. This victory maintained the 2nd XI’s 100% record this season under brilliant, gifted, talented & sexy skipper Lee Collins

The Sunday team were defeated at the DCG against Woodham Mortimer. The side only had 8 players. Please contact Alex Franklin or CJ if you can play on Sundays!!

First XI opening batsman John Williams completed the London marathon on Sunday 26th April 2009 and broke the Guinness World Record for his part in the largest linked team to complete the race. Week 1 news

The first league games of the season saw two excellent but very different wins for Danbury CC.

Away at Springfield the 1st XI secured a comfortable 7 wicket victory against the home side. After restricting Springfield to 135 all out with the wickets being shared equally amounst the bowlers, the batsmen replied with controlled aggression reaching their target in just over twenty overs for the loss of three wickets.

The 2nd XI saw visitors OC'c total an impressive 235 but dogged batting from Danbury saw them home against the odds with just two overs to spare to record another superb victory for DCC.

More details of individual heroics once this reporter has sobered up and can recall them.

Previous Headlines…

When the website caught up with First XI skipper Chris Huntington yesterday he was keeping his cards very close to his (ample) chest when questioned about Saturday’s fixture.

“I cannot confirm the starting line-up yet, but we are very much looking forward to being back in Division 2,” he said finishing off another portion of chips, “this is at very least where Danbury deserve to be & we certainly have the players to compete and succeed at this level”

In preseason news, Danbury QP won their final preseason friendly ahead of the eagerly awaited 2009 season with an 8 wicket victory over local rivals Rettendon on Saturday. There were runs for all four batsmen who got in: Ian Rogers, Stuart Hills, James Banfield & the skipper Chubs.

In other news, First XI opening batsman John Williams completed the London marathon on Sunday and broke the Guinness World Record for his part in the largest linked team to complete the race. John and his 29 fellow competitors were raising money for Help the Hospices and are still accepting donations at

Let’s get it on…

----------------------------------------------------------

In a dramatic last day to the 2008 season, DQPCC 1st team steal a promotion place from division 3 and the 2nd team avoid the drop as both teams win their final fixtures in a nail-biting climax.
